Heat Pump?

A QUESTION that the Low Carbon Energy Centre Showroom is always being asked is ‘What exactly is a heat pump?’ In broad terms it is a heat generating appliance that recovers heat from the atmosphere or from the ground. The boiler scrappage scheme allows for the replacement of the old boiler with an ‘A’ rated appliance. Although the new generation of ‘A’ rated condensing boilers are much more efficient, their replacement and associated work is still subject to 17.5% VAT. However, if a heat pump is installed in place of the old boiler, then the VAT rate for the installation drops to only 5%.

Let a thousand flowers bloom

Over the past two months the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has given winners of the Low Carbon Community Challenge (LCCC) grants of up to £500,000. Most of the projects involve small communities of 1,000 to 3,000 people planning a mix of measures such as new hydro-, wind, solar and biomass power; home insulation. The programme will coincide with the birth of electricity feed-in tariffs on April 1st. Ministers hope the new tariffs will create up to 750,000 micro-power installations by 2020. (That may be overly optimistic: in Germany, where feed-in tariffs began in 2000, there were just 290,000 micro-power installations by the end of 2006.)

Stirling Insulation Effort

Thousands of householders across Stirling have signed up to the Scottish Government’s Home Insulation Scheme. A number of areas across Scotland were chosen to pilot the sheme - Stirling was the only place where every resident could apply for help. So far over 4 thousand householders have received energy saving advice and green home reports. On top of this 775 homes will benefit from free or discounted cavity wall or loft insulation.
