Power Predictor
UK start-up Better Generation has launched a new device designed to help businesses andhouseholds measure the amount of wind and solar power they could generate using microgeneration technologies. The Power Predictor device collects data from a small-scale weather station that can be fixed at sites where solar panels or micro-turbines could be installed.

As part of a dramatic overhaul to upgrade its facilities for students and in keeping with Building Regulations Part L, Leicester College has replaced old gas boilers with state-of-the-art solar thermal technology that provide up to 70 percent of its annual hot water needs and cut energy bills at its vocational training campus.

School Efficiency Drive
Making Britain’s schools more energy efficient could help headteachers to save £70 million in annual electricity bills and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 600,000 tonnes. According to the Carbon Trust, reducing energy wastage at schools could deliver enough savings to fund 230,000 computers or 4.5 million text books for students. The figures were revealed as the environmental organisation launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging schools to do more to tackle climate change.

Heat Pump Esco
A new energy services company (ESCO) is seeking £10 million investment to back its plans to provide renewable heating and cooling systems for new buildings in the UK and Europe. Greenrock Energy Ltd has been formed by a group of oil and property entrepreneurs led by telecommunications mogul Cameron McColl, and boasts former energy minister Brian Wilson as part of its board. Based in Edinburgh, the ESCO will finance and operate ground source heat pump systems, selling heating and cooling services to the buildings attached.

Green consultancy
Two of the UK’s leading green consultancies have announced they are to team up to extend the advice and services they offer to both commercial and domestic customers. Environmental and energy auditing specialist Envos and micro-renewables supplier British Eco announced yesterday that they are to work together to access each other’s customer base, in a move that will see Envos offering energy audits to British Eco’s green technology customers and vice versa.

Seaweed Power
While enjoyed selectively as ‘dulse’, seaweed is to be targeted across Ireland and Scotland for another more dynamic use than eating its dried version. NI Energy Minister Arlene Foster today launched a research project that aims to develop ways to convert seaweed into fuel. They will investigate ways of converting seaweeds and plant algae into fuel as an alternative to the use of food crops to produce bio-fuels.

Manchester Heat Pumps
Manchester-based energy services company ENER-G has agreed a new partnership with an Italian manufacturer of air-source heat pump systems. The deal will bring Robur’s “gas absorption heat pump” technology to the UK, to offer renewable heating and cooling for businesses and public sector organisations facing carbon emissions restrictions from next year.

Devon Heat
DEVON has achieved the biggest increase in the region in the amount of heat generated from renewable energy in the past year, but still lags behind Cornwall as the South West’s top user of green power. According to a new survey, Devon added the greatest amount to its installed heat capacity, with 4.58MW, closing the gap between it and leading county Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Britain could become a booming market for solar power from next year when the UK introduces a support system used successfully by dozens of other countries. Last week 240 MPs signed a parliamentary motion supporting the mass rollout of solar photovoltaic (PV) power. The support was the biggest of any such motion introduced in this parliament.

Customers at a new branch of Sainsbury’s in Gloucester will generate electricity when they drive over ‘kinetic road plates’ on the entrance to the car park. The devices will convert the motion of the cars into enough energy to power the tills inside the store, reducing the amount taken from the National Grid.

BT is exhibiting plans to erect two wind turbines at its Goonhilly station in Cornwall. The company said wind conditions at the site were ideal for the project and it hopes to get about 25% of its electricity from green energy.

Government departments, hospitals, community centres and local authorities are to be offered energy efficiency loans to help them save money while also reducing their carbon emissions.

Devon Award
AN Ashden award for sustainable energy has been won by Devon County Council. The council is boosting a green rural regeneration in Devon by stimulating both supply and demand for renewable energy. As a multi-partner project it has led to renewable energy installations in small and medium-sized enterprises, community organisations and domestic properties. The scheme has saved about 1,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year and created 55 jobs and safeguarded 16 more.

Scottish Loans
THE Scottish Government is considering spending tens of millions of pounds a year on a loans scheme to spur people into action to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. A report for the Scottish Government has revealed a large-scale subsidised loans scheme could encourage up to 26,000 households to take action each year. Loans of about £10,000 for each home would be available, under the plans outlined by EST.
