Community Biomass

RESIDENTS of a Lake District village will soon be getting their heating and hot water from pioneering woodchip technology. A ground-breaking £1m community biomass heating system at Thirlmere, near Keswick, has gained backing from a funding body dedicated to green energy. The Lake District Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) has handed over £20,000 for a pioneering scheme to provide locals with heating and hot water from the technology.

North-east CHP

Up to 1,000 jobs could be created after a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) station in the north east of England was given the go ahead by Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks. The 1,020MW gas-fired CHP station at Seal Sands in Teeside will be constructed by Thor Cogeneration. Stockton Borough Council approved the scheme for the 40 acre site back in April 2007 and the license to generate was also approved last year, but the company has had to wait to get full approval from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

Yorkshire Forward

YORKSHIRE Forward has launched a second round of funding from the £400,000 Farm Resource Efficiency Programme. The range of environmental technologies eligible for support has been widened to include renewable power, renewable heat, rainwater harvesting, water recycling systems and manure management. Applicants can benefit from up to £20,000 at a rate of 40 per cent against eligible expenditure with a minimum capital investment of £5,000.

Green Fingers

A GREEN-FINGERED team from Dundee College has designed a thoroughly eco-friendly garden in a bid to win the Lord Provost’s prize for a fourth year. The horticultural group, in partnership with Craigmill Skillcentre, Strathmartine Hospital, and Tayside Energy Efficiency, will exhibit the garden at the Dundee Flower and Food Festival. They have incorporated a range of features which show off the advantages of micro-renewable energy.

Highland Renewables

Renewable power sources such as wind, solar and wood-fuelled boilers have helped a council cut energy use by 12.5% and carbon emissions by 11%. Highland Council has installed 63 solar panels on the roof of its council chambers in Inverness. Solar water heating systems will also be fitted to 15 schools as well as swimming pools at Dingwall, Invergordon, Tain and Thurso. The local authority has plans for wind turbines on several schools.

Edinburgh Renewables

A MASSIVE regeneration of Leith Docks has been approved by the city council. Outline planning permission was granted by the council’s planning committee. Councillors have asked developers Forth Ports to aim at making the development carbon neutral by using renewables such as wind and even hydro. The development includes 15,000 new houses.

New studies pinpoint potential locations in Leicestershire for hydro-electric power plants. This comes at the same time as other studies look into the feasibility of wind power and there are already proposals in some parts of Leicestershire for wind turbines, which are the subject of enormous controversy.

The Co-operative is extending its £1 million renewable energy programme for schools to biomass boilers, ground source heat pumps and wind turbines. The installations will be part of the Green Energy for Schools initiative which will also see Co-op install photovoltaic solar panels on 60 schools.

A pioneering technology could soon be helping generate renewable energy. Grants of up to £5,000 are available from Leicestershire County Council to develop projects which produce green energy from agricultural waste. Anaerobic digestion, where manure and food waste are converted into electricity and heat, can reduce methane levels and the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.

Two Scottish island communities have been awarded £62,000 to help them cut their carbon footprint. Barra and Vatersay have plans for a community-owned wind turbine and better energy efficiency in homes. Funding for the proposals is coming from the Scottish Government’s £18.8m climate challenge fund.

Fuel Poverty

The best strategy to eliminate fuel poverty forever is to ensure every home is insulated and energy efficient to the highest standards. Therefore, much of the money raised should be used to kickstart a national programme of home energy efficiency and installing renewable energy, starting with the homes of the fuel poor, says a petition from Labour MPs.

National Trust for Scotland

THE NATIONAL Trust For Scotland, the nation’s largest conservation charity, wants to install solar panels and other renewable energy sources in some of the country’s most historic buildings. With its energy bills hovering at 8% of its outgoings - 2% off the fuel poverty mark - the NTS said it is being forced to look at less traditional power sources.

A renewable energy supply designed to give Eigg power 24-hours-a-day has worked “brilliantly”, according to the island’s trust secretary. The £1.6m system for the island in the Small Isles between Skye and the Ardnamurchan peninsula uses a mix of hydro, wind and solar power. It went online for the first time in February. Maggie Fyffe said it was working out far cheaper than diesel generators, which they previously relied on.
